Lee Godie pencil on board titled "Girl Hate". Signed lower left, original price tag on back. This piece depicts the side profile of a girl wearing a striped hat. A highly collectible piece, especially for a Chicago art enthusiast!
Lee Godie (1908-1994) is often considered Chicago's most collected artist. Godie chose to live outside on the streets of Chicago and could often be found sitting outside the steps of the Art Institute of Chicago selling her art. She was particular about who she sold her art to, and was not afraid to refuse a sale or to even speak with someone she deemed unfit. Her art was delivered and created with a performance, often involving song and dance, and she described it as "part of the magic, even part of the art itself." Godie worked with a variety of mediums including photography, watercolor, pen, pencil, crayon, tempera, on paper, board, canvas, and sometimes even discarded window blinds. Her art has been displayed in galleries and museums including the Hayward Gallery in London, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and is highly sought after for collectors!
