Though he loved to paint landscapes early on in his career, he found portraits to be more successful. He was often commissioned by the Prince of Wales who hung his portraits in St James's Palace. The man in the painting, Sir Richard Brinsley Sheridan was an Anglo-Irish playwright and Whig politician.
