French confit pot in green and gold. Confit pots were once used for food preservation in France. In fact, the name "confit" stems from the French word "confire" which means to preserve. Now used for decorative purposes, these pieces of history actually have a very specific reason for how they're designed! Confit jars would be filled with meat or other goods that needed to be preserved, and then covered with a layer of rendered fat. Their unglazed lower half would be buried in a cool cellar or the ground. The glazed part of the pot would stick out of the ground, and the smooth surface prevented pests from climbing in. Nowadays, these pots do not serve their original purpose, rather they are a charming piece of decor that can be used as a flower pot or statement piece. Their rich history and intentional design has turned into an iconic rustic decorative item.

This particular confit pot is medium-sized with a tapered shape. Two handles rest on either side of the mouth of the pot. It is decorated with a light green glaze on the upper half, and gold glaze on the lower half. A charming decorative piece perfect for display in a kitchen or as a rustic planter.
