Snyder had many patrons throughout his career including some of the most powerful people in Europe like Archduke Albert of Austria, and King Philip III of Spain. His art paved the way for realistic animal portraiture that has carried on for hundreds of years.
This painting depicts a pack of hunting dogs fighting with a deer. The scene is painted in front of a beautiful landscape that includes trees, a cloudy sky, and a few birds flying past. The action of the foreground contrasts the serenity of the background which emphasizes the dramatic moment further. The painting is held in a black frame with subtle details.
