Folk art carved Uncle Sam from the Estate of William Safire.
William Safire was an American political columnist and author who wrote the "On Language" column in the New York Times Magazine. He was also a presidential speechwriter who served under Nixon. On top of that, Safire was also a Pulitzer Board member from 1995 to 2004 and became the full-time chief executive of the Dana Foundation in 2000. Safire was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006. Safire passed from pancreatic cancer at 79 in 2009.
This carving depicts Uncle Sam standing atop an oil barrel. The oil barrel is painted red white and blue with the letters "USA" written in yellow with a light blue outline. Uncle Sam is unpainted and has many details including his iconic top hat, jacket, and a cane. A lovely piece of Americana that is sure to start conversation.
